Honoring Our Grandparents

Growing up going to visit my grandparents on the weekends was routine. Something about my grandparents’ house was always welcoming. The smells coming from the kitchen, the warm hugs, the stories they told about my parents.

My grandparents’ house was a gathering spot for the family. I bonded with cousins on Sundays. I met family, who would come for visits from Puerto Rico.

On my mother’s side, I lost my Papa early in my life. My Mama however, has been a force in my life. She’s a little lady but don’t confuse her size with her abilities. I use to wonder how she could see me and my cousin from a block away. She could hear our secrets from the next room. She has the ability to bring family together in one room who otherwise would run for the hills.

On my father’s side, my Abuela passed away when I was about 18. I remember her speaking and everyone else just listening.  She could silence a room without raising her voice. Her word was law. I remember the warmth of her embrace. She had this aura around her, I just knew I wanted to be in it. I always knew I was loved by her.

My new bilingual books “My Grandmother’s a Superhero” and “My Grandmother, Mi Abuela” are in honor of both of them. Strong, independent women, both of whom have made me feel safe, loved and ready to conquer the world.

Our grandparents are the keepers of our past. The protectors of our present and the guidance to our futures. May we always treasure the importance of our grandparents in our lives and the importance of the elderly in our society.

Those who come before us pave the way for us.

As Always, Be A Ray of Sunshine,

Christine

Life is One Big Juggling Act

I am a mother of three awesome sons.  I work full time as a Teacher’s Assistant and I write children’s books. When I’m not cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and doing homework with the kids I actually find time to write.  Oh wait, I forgot to mention, I love to bake.  smiley

There are times when I feel physically exhausted and want to stay in bed.  My children’s smiles keep me going. The light that shines from their eyes, when we do something together, makes it all worth while.

Part of being a Mother is learning to balance them all out. That’s not to say that sometimes I don’t feel that I’m lacking in one aspect of my life in order to fulfill the needs of another aspect.  Everyday, I do my best and that’s all anyone can really do.

I believe sharing my dream of becoming a Children’s book Author with my children brought us closer together. I firmly believe that as a Woman, a Mother, I owe it to myself and my children to pursue my dreams.  What better way to show them that dreams are attainable.  I believe that when someone follows their path they become a ray of light for all others who wish to follow their hearts.

We should all be “Rays of Sunshine” and learn to smile a lot more!

A Ray Of SunShine

The reason I named my website “A Ray Of Sunshine”. I can’t say that my life hasn’t taken detours or even roadblocks but I am determined to find my way. I find it truly amazing that sometimes these roadblocks take us right back to the beginning. Where all our dreams first started, Childhood. As a child, I played teacher, I enjoyed baking and I loved reading and writing. Though time has passed, those things have not changed. They remain at the core of who I am.
Maybe I just lost sight of my inner being and started down a path of pleasing others. Maybe I just got caught up with motherhood that I didn’t realize the importance of my gifts. I love reading and writing. It brings me bliss, more importantly Peace. The same goes, for when I am baking, I lose myself in what I am doing and a natural glow radiates from within me. When I am in the classroom and I am reading or playing with a child I have a natural joy. That is because all these things come natural for me, I am not pretending, I truly love what I do.
Fear is an obstacle, we cannot afford. It makes us stagnate, keeps us blind to our true selves. Fear does not allow us to become who we were meant to be.
That’s not to say I’m not afraid. I am afraid every day. Afraid no one will like my stories, my cake will be a disaster, the students won’t welcome me in. I still get up and try, every day, with a new positive outlook. That with every day comes a new beginning, I am determined to stay positive in a world, a society that focuses way too much on negativity. I am determined to be a Ray of Sunshine where ever I go!

Author/Illustrator collaboration

Good evening everyone,

I’m here sitting at my computer, when I get a new message from my illustrator. It’s a new picture of Tyler, the character from my first children’s book “Can I always come back home” . I want to clap, jump for joy or shout with excitement . She amazes me, every time I see a new illustration , I feel as if she’s read my mind.

The collaboration between author and illustrator is very important to the success of any book. Without my words, she would have no inspiration and without her illustrations my story could not come to life .

Inspiration behind “Can I Always Come Back Home?”

As each of my three children grew up they seemed to ask the same question.  While each child asked in a different way the basis was still the same. “If they left would they be able to come back home?”  When I said yes to my youngest  son, he asked why?  I thought how wonderful it would be to write my answer in a story. That’s when I wrote “Can I always come back home?”

Finding Zen in Writing

Good Morning,

Yesterday, I sat in Barnes and Noble doing research on a book I am writing.  I found it to be so relaxing. Everything else that I have going on in my life seemed to dwindle from my mind.  I was at peace.  It dawned on me, it truly is important to have a zen place . A place where your spirit can relax and replenish. I am fortunate to have mine be surrounded by books.  I can walk into any library or book store and feel at peace . Here’s hoping you find yours! and if you have you can share here.
